Night Court

Night Court by Mux Mool!

The VaM-style spell today is Night Court - the title coming from this song by Mux Mool!

One of my favorites, and one of the best tracks off of Avant-Pop by Ghostly Essentials, which is where I heard it. I haven't heard much more Mux Mool stuff yet, but I have been saving all of it for some point, I think it would be best to listen to a whole album of theirs in one go, like Lusine or Bonobo.

Anyways, great track, and I highly recommend Ghostly Essentials: Avant-Pop - which is one of my favorite albums ever

One issue with that playlist though, the last track is wrong, this is the correct track! School of Seven Bells - Half Asleep

Ok, here is the spell's effects!

All of the black highlighted sections should be secret, the caster should Not see them!

Night Court

Duration: Until Judgment is Passed

Range: Specified Trial Area

This spell summons judges – Each has 50% chance to rule in favor of the caster, and one judge is summoned per caster level up to 7th level, then the judges summoned have 65% chance to rule in favor of the caster, then at level 14 and onwards they are 85% chance to rule in favor of the caster.

Each judge will convene around the specified trial area, and will listen to the statement made by each party, then make a judgment.

The caster specifics the trial area, and this must be a discrete area, such as a room – a garden – a building – but could be more broad or more specific.

The party judged as guilty goes with the judges into the darkness – and is dragged to a cell in the blackest castle, a dark fortress where endless crows play squash and racquetball – and chop down great stony oak for endless rolling fires around the castle, with which to ward off greater evils yet unseen, great beasts and dangerous figures in the impenetrable dark.

The guilty has a more formal trial and appeals here, the trial has a 20% chance to allow release after a few days, and each appeal has a 35% chance to allow release, and in any case if these are not favorable they will invariably be released in X years, where X is the level of the caster of Night Court.

The judge’s form is that of a great black crow, tall as a man.

They speak in a thin voice to the caster, and a thick voice to everyone else.

They emerge from any dark spaces in the area, and that is where they disappear once judgment has been cast.

Here are the Judge’s Stats:

HD 7 HP 29 Speed 170’ Can Fly

Armor 14 Morale 9 Attack: Grapple With Strength 17 – Attempt to drag into darkness

Special: May use Telekinesis at will, but only on black things. Featherfall, Knock, and Locate Object 1X each a day.

Miscast Table (Roll This Secretly!)

1 – The judges automatically pass judgment, and declare the caster guilty.

2 – The judges attempt to just take one person each with them, and no actual proceedings take place.

3 – The judges are so ferociously swayed by the testimony that they attempt to rip whoever was convicted to shreds instead of attempting to take them to the darkness.

4 – Quadruple the number of judges, they are all 35% chance to side with the caster.

5 – The judges swarm out, at least 100 of them, and they attempt to capture all witnesses to the spell being cast and all persons in the specified trial area – they will be taken to the darkness and the trial will occur there, in a vast and dark courtroom – all judges will be 1D100 each to side with the caster, and there will be twenty judges, the proceedings will be long and scary.

6 – The judges are delayed, with one appearing after the other and in total taking an hour to fully appear.

7 – The judges cannot see people who have closed their eyes.

8 – The judges are invisible unless no-one can see them. Viewing in reflections does not count.

9 – The judges cannot hear, and rely on written communication.

10 – The judges swoop in on the guilty and surround them – when they draw away the guilty has been transformed into a judge, who leaves with the rest of them.

11 – The judges airily decry the situation as having precedent – so half of them go to retrieve records – and when they return they make judgment – this takes approximately 3 -18 days, and the judges will attempt to stop anybody from leaving the specified trial area.

12 – The spell functions as normal, but this casting has one wrinkle at the end of the trial – several of the imprisoned are released as the judges leave, these are NPCs stat served their time in the darkness, and may be dangerous, crazy, or people the Player Characters know.
