Back in my Body

Back in my Body by Maggie Rogers!

The VaM-style spell today is Back in my Body- the title coming from this song by Maggie Rogers.

I love all of Maggie's music - the whole album, Heard it in a Past Life, Is well worth a listen, and her music videos never ever disappoint.

I love Alaska, Light On, On + Off, Fallingwater, Give a Little, Dog Years - and all the other tracks without music videos are exquisite, I especially like The Knife and Retrograde.

 Here are the lyrics!

I was stopped in London when I felt it coming down
Crashing all around me with a great triumphant sound
Like the dam was breaking and my mind came rushing in
I was stopped in London oh I was awakening, I was
I was stopped in Paris when I almost ran away
Two times round the block before I decided to stay
Puffed along a cigarette that went and made me sick
Spent another day pretending I was over it
This time I know I'm fighting
This time I know I'm (back in my body)
This time I know I'm fighting
This time I know I'm back in my body, oh
I'm back in my body, oh
And all along the highway there's a tiny whispering sound
Saying I could find you in the dark of any town
But all that I am hearing in the poem of my mind
Are silent twisted words finding their way in every line
Oh this time
Oh this time
This time I know I'm fighting
This time I know I'm (back in my body)
This time I know I'm fighting
This time I know I'm (back in my body)
Lost you in the border town of anywhere
I found myself when I was going everywhere
This time I know I'm fighting
This time I know I'm
Oh this time, oh this time
Oh this time, oh this time
Oh this time, oh this time
Oh this time, oh this time
This time I know I'm fighting
This time I know I'm (back in my body)
This time I know I'm fighting
This time I know I'm (back in my body)
Lost you in the border town of anywhere
I found myself when I was going everywhere
This time I know I'm fighting
This time I know I'm back in my body, oh
I'm back in my body, oh
I'm back in my body, oh
(Back in my body)

And here is the spell!

Back in my Body

Duration: Instantaneous

Range: Caster

The caster’s body snaps into focus – their form lithe and strong – their actions sharp and directed.

When this spell is cast, the caster’s muscles tense –

their body becomes as pointed as a blade, and

immediately they may take a single action.

This spell may be cast at any point, out of initiative

order, as a free action, or otherwise.

Miscast Table

1 – All of the caster’s muscles cramp – they must immediately make a save versus paralyze or be in agony for the next hour, unable to move.

2 – Instead of the spell functioning, it just does not work, and the caster’s next turn is skipped.

3 – A sneaky little compulsion rides this spell’s coattails into the caster’s mind – later this session the referee must cast this spell for the caster, even if that would have a miscast chance – and the referee picks the action. Make it something really bad, if you can!

4 – Instead of going back in their body – they go out. Treat this as the caster’s consciousness becoming a pearly white sphere, which they can observe and move from and with – the referee controls their body – this lasts until they save versus magic three times in a row – they may make an attempt once each turn, or once every five minutes when not in combat. If the body dies, their projection must locate a new body, and through strange and obscure ritual, inhabit it.

5 – The spell functions as normal, but something feels different – reroll a chosen statistic.

6 – The caster’s body falls apart, neatly, into pieces. They control each piece, and may attempt to rebuild, the pieces stick together good as new.

7 – The instant the spell was cast, there was a gap – and the caster’s consciousness was forced out – a demon took hold, the caster is now possessed.

8 – The instant the spell was cast, there was a gap – and the caster’s consciousness was forced out – an angel took hold, the caster is now being used as a vessel.

9 – The instant the spell was cast, there was a gap – and the caster’s consciousness was forced out – an alien consciousness took hold, the caster is are now puppeted.

10 – The caster dies. The caster then may make a save vs paralyze – if they succeed, they return to life and the spell works as normal – the action will automatically succeed. If the caster fails the saving throw – they remain dead.

11 – Every living thing in a 100’ radius of the caster, including the caster have their muscles cramp – they must immediately make a save versus paralyze or be in agony for the next hour, unable to move.

12 – The caster is atomized – reduced to nothing in a great screaming series of white and glowing reactions. They may return if they make 94 save vs magic rolls, the player may make one per session, the successes are cumulative. During these rolls, after a certain amount of successes they may materialize, though only for the briefest of moments – a circulatory system, muscles, skeleton – so on. When they return to the real world – they will have some great change, they may be psychic, they may be preternaturally strong, they may have more esoteric or cosmic powers – whatever the referee and player agree upon.
