Potion Math for Hagaen Scalde

 

Create 8 basic reagants, components, or magical liquids. Then assign another set of 28 2-part mixes of those initial ingredients. Then each combination of the 28, which is I think 378 or so.
 
 So its like 1+2, 1+3, 1+4, 1+5, 1+6, 1+7, 1+8, and 2+3, 2+4, 2+5, 2+6, 2+7, 2+8,and 3+4, 3+5, 3+6, 3+7, 3+8, and 4+5, 4+6, 4+7, 4+8, and 5+6, 5+7, 5+8,and  6+7, 6+8, and finally 7+8. 
 
Those are the first 28 combination-created potions. Same potion/ingredient + itself is no reaction. Certain combinations might be Misfires, and there are many good misfire tables in LotFP, and other similar roleplaying games. This system might lead to mid combat mixing of restorative and Waterbreathing to create noxious gas potion, or maybe mixing red-handed plus bouncing to create a more powerful healing potion that you can splash on an ally down a parapet. 
 
The mixing for players would have to be experimentation, which is what has always been missing for me in AD&D, where any two potions mixed = explosion. This limits the use of potions, which I feel should be something the players get to experiment with.
 
Doses for each person is a mouthful in their sized mouth,
so a halflings dose would be less than a giants dose.

Format is Number, What it is, What it does, Then Specific game function. For the 28, There is an expanded visual flavor and smell component because the first eight are all natural fluids, and are easier to describe.

You automatically succeed the next exhaustion check/ is worth sleep.

Counts as daily water.

The Secondary 28

Aging- Looks and tastes and smells like vanilla extract.

You age 1d4 years. You gain some amount of experience in the process.

Redhanded- Sweet Red juice smells of sugar tastes of red berries.

Your hands sweat red paint for an hour.

Waterbreathing – Looks like fish oil smells and tastes like nothing.

You may breathe underwater and not above water for one hour.

Sensitive- Smells like rose water tastes like rain looks clear.

One of your senses is extrasensory for one hour. (As ESP spell)

Dragonskin– Texture of hot sauce smells of wet rocks and tastes like lost teeth.

You grow scaly and flame-resistant for one hour (+1d8 levels Breath Saving throw)

Love- Sour Red syrup looks vibrantly red and smells like old boxes, tastes invokes heart flutters, flavor is indescribable.

You have daydreams that permanently affect the emotions of the people in them, yours and theirs for an hour.

Restorative- Tastes of minty mouthwash and looks vivid sea blue smells like herb garden.

Your body resets to 1d4 hours ago.

Sleeping- Strong fake grape taste grainy consistency and smells of hot steam.

You fall asleep for 1d4 hours. This roll explodes! (If it is 4, reroll. Repeat until you roll not a 4.)

Invisibility- Tastes looks and smells like vodka.

You go invisible to normal sight. No duration. Permanent until somehow reversed. (See #11)

Panacea- Tastes like black tea looks like light blue water and smells like old paper.

Cures all diseases, curses, afflictions, malignments, and otherwise.

Visibility- Tastes of tomato juice looks separated like red oil and off-color water and smells like ripe tomatoes.

Makes you visible. No Duration. Works on being splashed with as well.

Darkvision- Looks like carrot juice tastes like bitter poison smells of earth.

You see as normal in the dark for one hour. (As Darkvison)

Familiar- has seltzer-sized bubbles tastes like aspic and smells of pectin cooking.

Your spit is animate, and enough forms an animal that takes commands. This effect lasts one hour.

Cleanser- Tastes like water that is too clean looks like water smells of nothing.

You begin to vomit and shit uncontrollably. For one hour.

Scaling- Tastes like cucumber water looks like light yellow water and smells like ink.

You shrink or grow as your self-image decreases or increases.

Memory- Consistency and taste like spittle and lime looks like cloudy water.

You gain access to all of your memories for one hour.

Stretchy- Beery smell taste is closer to cooked wheat in water and looks like tan fluid.

You are immune to blunt damage for one hour.

Projection- Root beer taste and look consistency is very thin.

You may astrally project at will for one hour.

Experimental- Cola taste smell and appearance.

Dm makes up a potion on the spot or uses one they have prepared.

Babel- Taste like mild black tea coffee and cocoa all mixed and is opaque white and is thin.

You understand all languages for one hour.

Statue-Bone broth taste and is thick and viscous and smells of cooking meat.

In a couple of seconds, you turn into stone. Reverts in one hour.

Bouncing- Maple syrup flavor heavily carbonated texture and smells of rubber.

You may leap thrice normal for one hour.

Spelled- Hellebore taste bright blue color and consistency and staining like ink.

You grok (Understand/know) one spell, and now retain it. Once used the spell goes away.

Looping- Mango puree texture and the pulp moves tastes like jackfruit and smells like leaves.

You split off reality like a repeating decimal. Everything happens as normal. After one hour, if alive, you return back here, just about to drink.

Animal- Tastes like all fruits combined smells like b.o. and looks brown and clear.

Polymorph imbiber into a random animal for one hour. (As Polymorph Self or Other, Depending on imbiber.)

DoubleOne- Tastes of mixed drinks disguising alcohol and two potions effects and descriptions.

Lots of fun combinations to accidentally consume!

Madness- Licorice smell taste like chemicals and appearance of melted butter but black.

Go mad. Madness up to the GM, reverts in one hour.

Comatic- Texture taste and smell of Milk.

Go into coma. Reverts if you consume another Comatic potion.

 

 

 

 

And of course, these 28 derived potions would combine to 378 third-tier potions, and after that most likely a mud point. If order matters... Then the number of third level potions leaps to 756.
